Leaders as Readers
LEAD Director & CEO, Sandy Thompson:
I’ve been doing a lot of driving lately so have been listening to podcasts. I have two current favourites.
At the age of 21 Jay Shetty became a monk for 3 years, despite a career trajectory of working in the corporate world. He is now a bestselling author, celebrity media host and coaches significant leaders.
He says, “I owe everything to the lessons learned as a monk. Living as a monk was like going to life school, and the last seven years have been the exam. The Monk Mindset works. Whether you want to find your purpose, manage negativity, build real confidence or overcome your fears, the tools I learned when I lived as a monk truly do work.”
His vision is to make Wisdom go viral - sharing wisdom and behavioral science about life and the mind to be accessible, relevant and practical. His podcasts are fun to listen to, but also astoundingly poignant to real life and leadership. Jay doesn’t make me want to be a monk but I do want to be him when I grow up. Definitely an inspirational podcast and the tools shared by Jay and those he interviews are must for every leadership toolkit
Impact Boom is an Australian social enterprise that is focussed on supporting and developing social enterprise globally. Their vision is for a healthy, sustainable, inclusive and fair world where people and planet thrive. Their mission is to unleash potential to create positive social impact and change the world for the better. Who wouldn’t want to get on board!
On their podcast interviews Impact Boom explores the insights global leaders and share resources to tackle complex problems. While some of the episodes can be a bit business centric I love hearing the stories of individuals and creating significant change in communities through positive action and a empathetic focus on humankind and the planet. My favourite episode is with NZ’s own leadership scholar Brad Jackson talking about leadership of place – the significance of the place where leaders are from, and the significance of the place in which they lead.
